Mentorship is a cornerstone of the FYiC CoP, empowering former youth in care, allies, and leaders across organizations, families and systems to build skills, confidence and meaningful impact.

Mentorship Opportunities for Former Youth in Care:

  • Learning Buddies

One-on-one peer mentorship that connects former youth in care with experienced guides to build confidence, skills, and pathways into personal, professional, and community leadership.

Participants receive access to trainings, resources, and group mentoring sessions.

Learning Buddies are matched with a mentor for an eight-week cycle, with the option to extend or request a new match if the fit isn’t right.

  • Leadership Advisors

One-to-one, two-way mentoring with experienced leadership. You offer strategic guidance to the FYiC CoP, help co-create programs and policies, and mentor the community, while also receiving direct mentorship from the CEO to support your own growth, leadership, and impact.

Leadership Advisors receive exclusive access to leadership coaching, specialized training, strategic dialogues, and collaborative spaces where their expertise directly informs organizational direction and innovation.

Leadership Advisors also choose their level of commitment and can opt in or out of opportunities based on their availability and interests.

  • Working Group Members

One-to-one and group mentorship that supports the strategic work of the FYiC CoP. Members receive guidance while contributing to projects and initiatives, with opportunities to lead or co-lead working groups, participate in storytelling and advocacy, and help amplify the voices and expertise of people with lived foster care experience.

Working group members typically meet monthly, but can meet more or less frequently depending on group needs and availability.

  • The Thread (Digital Zine)

We pair digital zine contributors with experienced mentors who offer guidance, support, and feedback throughout the creative process. Together, you can refine your message, share your perspective with confidence, and create meaningful impact.

Get involved as a contributor and/or join our editorial team. We aim to publish quarterly, with flexibility to release more or fewer issues depending on resources, capacity, and CoP priorities.

From personal growth to systemic change—leadership starts here.
